NSW Minerals Council welcomes Productivity Commission review of resources regulation

The NSW Minerals Council welcomes the Productivity Commission’s review of resources regulation that has been announced today by Resources Minister Matt Canavan at the NSW Minerals Council’s 2019 Health, Safety, Environment and Community Conference currently underway in the Hunter Valley.

“The announcement today from Minister Canavan is very welcome and the Productivity Commission’s involvement is also very encouraging.” NSW Minerals Council CEO, Stephen Galilee said today.

“It’s great to see that the Federal Government is listening to industry concerns about the ongoing delays in assessment processes and prepared to seek solutions.”

“In NSW planning timeframes are increasing. The NSW Government has set itself a target of an average assessment timeframe of 500 days for major mining projects, however, some assessments are taking a thousand days or more.”

“This review highlights the need for reform of the planning assessment process to deliver shorter timeframes while maintaining rigorous assessment against the high standards expected by proponents and the public.”
