2014 NSW Mining Expenditure Survey – Mid-Western Region

The NSW Minerals Council’s latest Expenditure Survey has found that despite tough times mining continues to be a major contributor to Mudgee and the Mid-West region, with over 200 mining jobs created locally over 2013-14.

The number of people employed in mining in the Mid-Western Regional Council area increased from 1,231 in 2012-13 to 1,434 in 2013-14.

Total local spending comprised of $170.2 million in wages and salaries to 1,434 full-time employees and $150 million in purchases with 297 Mid-Western Regional businesses, along with community contributions and payments to local government.

“This survey, now completed for a third year, demonstrates the scale of mining’s contribution to Mudgee and the Mid- Western Region, and the importance of mining to the broader NSW economy.  The survey also highlights the economic impact of tough times, and how this is flowing into other sectors of the local economy,” NSW Minerals Council CEO, Stephen Galilee said today.

The number of business in the local mining supply chain has fallen- from 360 in 2012-13 to 297 in 2013-14 – as margins tighten and business conditions get tougher.

“While spending with local businesses is down, mining’s contribution to the Mudgee economy remains strong, with more mining jobs created over the last 12 months,” he said.

“So let’s work together to keep mining strong. Because a strong mining sector means a stronger Mudgee and Mid-Western region, and a stronger NSW.”
