2015 NSW Mining Health Safety and Environment Conference
Mon 31 August – Wed 2 September
Nearly 500 NSW miners and industry professionals will gather in the Hunter valley from today to focus on how the industry can maintain and improve its world leading safety, health and environmental record.
Over three days, at the NSW mining industry’s flagship event for 2015, a range of speakers from industry and government will discuss new ideas and innovations in workplace health and safety, community relations, and environmental management.
“This event is an important opportunity for our industry to come together to focus on our four biggest priorities – health, safety, environment and community, “ NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee said today.
Australia’s leading health communicator Dr Sally Cockburn, also known as ‘Dr Feelgood’ will deliver the conference’s keynote health address. With over 30 years clinical experience Dr Cockburn will share her unique insights into the identification and management of health issues as they relate to the mining industry.
Prominent Australian dieticians Dr Trent & Jane Watson of Ethos Health will also present their initial research findings into obesity and its impacts on the mining workforce, as the industry and the community more generally moves to address this important health challenge.
“Obesity is not just an issue for mining but for the community in general. Having assessed the impacts in mining, the industry has the opportunity to take a leading role in this area to demonstrate that they not only help underpin regional economies but also assist in building stronger communities,” Dr Trent Watson said.
“Mining is a significant employer in NSW. This research has identified that the workplace can play a critical role in the prevention and management of obesity through social leadership, and providing a supportive workplace culture and environment, which has the potential for a broader impact, particularly in regional areas.” he said
The conference will also feature the highly competitive “NSW Mining Health, Safety, Environment & Community Awards” which showcase some of the best examples of leading practices, devices and systems from across NSW.
