Call for mentors to support women at NSW mines

Women in mining across NSW are being encouraged to participate in a mentoring program designed to help young women entering the resources sector and those looking to take the next step in their careers.

Women in Mining Network (WIMnet) supports women who work in the resources sector, with a goal of encouraging the attraction and retention of women to the industry. The inaugural WIMnet NSW Mentoring Program will run May 2015 – September 2015 with 20 mentee application places available.

The first of its kind in the state, the WIMnet NSW 2015 Mentoring Program was created in response to demand for formal mentoring from an increasing number of women working in mining, minerals and energy companies across the state.

Research suggested that up to 95 per cent of women working in the mining, minerals and energy sectors were looking for a formal face-to-face mentoring program to help build morale, confidence and enhance support to bring more women into what has traditionally been known as a male-dominated industry.

The WIMnet NSW 2015 Mentoring Program will use a structured framework, based on similar initiatives implemented in WA and QLD, including a matching process conducted by a Registered Psychologist and training process for all participants.
