Energy and Utilities Administration Amendment Bill 2022

Statement from NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee

The NSW Government’s Energy and Utilities Administration Bill 2022 to be considered by the NSW Parliament today has been hastily drafted with little or no consultation with the NSW coal industry, or with companies likely to be directly affected.

The Bill is unnecessarily heavy-handed and ignores due process.

Many people, including energy experts and economists from outside the coal sector, have expressed serious reservations about the effectiveness of a coal price cap in bringing down power prices, and warned of serious unintended consequences.

Notwithstanding these reservations, the NSW coal sector will seek to engage constructively with the NSW Government on implementation.
