Hard working NSW miners to be celebrated in Western Sydney

‘NSW miners powering Sydney, 365 days and Knights’. That’s the message the Newcastle Knights will deliver to the heart of Western Sydney when they take on the Parramatta Eels Pirtek Stadium on Sunday.

 

The Newcastle Knights will wear their high-vis replica miners jersey in the game, to be broadcast nationally on the Nine Network, in support of our world class NSW Miners that are working around the clock to power homes and businesses in Sydney and across the state.

 

“This weekend we’re bringing the Knights to Sydney. But every day of the year there’s another team of hard working miners generating electricity and jobs for the people of Sydney,” NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee said today.

 

“Suburbs in Western Sydney like Fairfield, Auburn and Parramatta sit at the heart of our NSW mining industry with business across the west supplying our mines. In fact, that economic activity generated in mining-related businesses effectively makes Sydney the second largest mining region in NSW.” 

 

“NSW mining companies spent around $2.9 billion with more than 3,400 businesses across Sydney last year. The jobs and income this generates supports thousands of Sydney families and pumps money back into their local suburbs.”

 

“Plus, coal fired power provides 84% of all NSW energy needs. And as the state’s largest commodity export, coal delivers a significant economic boost to the state. A strong mining industry means a strong economy and more jobs for workers and their families across Sydney and NSW.”

 

The connection between our NSW Miners and the Newcastle Knights is as strong as ever, demonstrated in a series of new videos featuring former Knights players, now proud coal miners, Bill Peden and Steve Simpson, and Knights captain Kurt Gidley whose father has been driving Hunter coal trains for more than 30 years.

 

“Our partnership with NSW Mining is really important. The mining industry is huge in the Hunter and rugby league is a big part of our community too, so it’s a great fit,” Newcastle Knights CEO Matthew Gidley said.   

 

“We want to help show how mining jobs in the Hunter support thousands of jobs in Sydney, which is why the boys are proud to be wearing the high-vis mining strip in Sydney against the Eels on Sunday.”
