Hunter Valley Operations – Independent Planning Commission Public Hearing

Economy 16 July 2026

Today, NSW has the chance to lock in hundreds of jobs and billions in investment and
export revenue for the next two decades.

After a four-year assessment by the Department of Planning, the NSW Independent
Planning Commission started hearings today to decide the future of the Hunter Valley
Operations (HVO) mine.

The proposed HVO Continuation Project represents a responsible path forward with mining
to continue at the site near Singleton until 2045, supporting more than 1500 direct jobs.

The mine supports hundreds of indirect jobs in local businesses in the Hunter and injects
billions of dollars into the economy, driven by wages, direct spending with local suppliers,
and NSW Government royalties that fund vital public infrastructure like schools, hospitals,
police, and transport projects.

In the last 4 years alone, HVO has contributed $6.9 billion to the NSW economy, including
over $3.8 billion spent on goods and services from over 750 local businesses.

The high-quality coal from HVO supplies our international trading partners with vital energy
security and fuel for their industrial needs. Now more than ever, Australia must uphold its
standing as a dependable energy trading partner.

The NSW Department of Planning thoroughly assessed the project's environmental impacts,
including greenhouse gas emissions, and confirmed they can be managed in accordance
with NSW Government policy, providing a clear basis for the IPC to approve the project.

During these uncertain economic times, NSW needs to secure major projects like the HVO
Continuation Project to drive economic activity, jobs and investment into the future.
