MYEFO message to NSW: get serious about project approvals
The strong message for the NSW Government out of today’s MYEFO report is that the mining approvals process in our state must be improved to generate economic activity and growth and avoid losing more NSW mining jobs.
During his address to the National Press Club, the Federal Treasurer, the Hon. Joe Hockey said:
‘It is also the case that we need to speed up mining approvals so that we don’t have delays that may cause investors to have second thoughts about projects…’
The Federal Treasurer’s comments regarding the need to address delays in the mining approvals process is supported by the Australian Workforce and Productivity Agency Report released yesterday that confirms that employment in construction on major projects is tipped to fall dramatically under ‘business as usual’ conditions due to a decline in approvals for major projects.
The message for NSW is clear – support faster approval of job-creating projects that underpin a strong economy.
‘Mining in NSW has had a tough 12 months, with a fall in commodity prices, a high Australian dollar and deep uncertainty about the NSW planning system,’ according to NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee.
‘Around 3000 coal mining jobs have been lost in NSW in the last twelve months alone, more than Holden will lose over the next four years across SA and Victoria, yet these NSW mining job losses barely rate a mention.’
‘MYEFO confirms more major project approvals are needed to sustain economic growth and protect jobs at the state and national level.’
‘Is the NSW Government serious about doing its share to help rescue the economy?’ Mr Galilee said.
