New biodiversity offsetting process welcomed

Uncategorized 20 March 2014

“

The NSW Minerals Council has welcomed the NSW Government’s announcement of a new policy approach to the biodiversity offsetting process for major projects.

“This new approach should provide greater consistency and certainty, reduce costs and regulation for industry, provide opportunities for farmers and other landowners, and improve environmental outcomes,” NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee said today.

“New mechanisms aimed at reducing the amount of agricultural land locked up in offsets should also help improve relations with farmers and other landowners.”

“As the new policy will be mandatory, it is vital that it is designed and implemented properly and the science behind it is robust. We’ll be assessing the detail over the exhibition period and will raise any concerns we have with the Government.”
