New minister continues engagement with mining
New NSW Minister for Resources & Energy Anthony Roberts MP has met with miners at the coal face during a visit to Centennial Coal’s Mandalong Mine site.
During his tour of the mine, near Morisset in the Hunter Valley, the minister saw longwall mining in action and got to see first hand this technically advanced mining operation at a site that provides fuel for local power stations and coal to the export market through the Port of Newcastle.
Joined by David Moult, CEO and Managing Director of Centennial Coal as well as Chairman of the NSW Minerals Council, and Julian Malnic, Chairman of the Sydney Mining Club, the Minister met with mine workers as part of his continuing effort to engage with the industry. The mine tour was conducted by Mandalong Mine Manager John Turner, who was recognised as Mine Manager of the Year at the Australian Mining Prospect Awards in 2012.
Mandalong Mine, in operation since 2005, was host to Sydney radio station 101.7 WSFM and its Million Dollar Mine contest to help demonstrate that mining is relevant to Sydney and its economy. The mine produces over 5 million tonnes of thermal coal each year.
