NSW Government Ministry – Resources – Statement from NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee

The NSW Minerals Council welcomes Deputy Premier Paul Toole’s decision to retain ministerial responsibility for resources in the new Ministry.

This reflects the key role of resources in regional NSW. It also continues the approach taken by former Deputy Premier John Barilaro to ensure resources-related issues are the responsibility of one of the most senior members of the Ministry and the Government.

Deputy Premier Toole has a strong track record of standing up for regional NSW and a sound appreciation of the important contribution of the mining sector. He also has a deep understanding of the needs of mining communities, including in his own electorate.

The next twelve months will be a critical time for the NSW mining sector and for regional NSW.

There are a range of mining projects currently progressing through the planning assessment process. These projects are much needed to provide an economic boost to the state economy and to provide jobs and investment in regional NSW. It is important that these projects are given the opportunity to receive their approvals and proceed.

NSW also stands on the cusp of significant new opportunities for a range of new minerals projects, and the right policy settings can deliver thousands more new jobs and billions in investment. The NSW Government has recognised this through its recently released Critical Minerals Strategy which maps a pathway to further potential minerals projects into the future.

We look forward to working with the Deputy Premier on these issues in the months ahead.
