Over 21500 Hunter footy fans turn out to back Knights and Miners

Industry 10 April 2016

“

Over 21500 fans and mining families have turned out in a sea of hivis to support two pillars of the Hunter community; the Newcastle Knights and the Hunter’s miners.

Fans, mining families, suppliers and industry supporters numbered over 21500, showing that Newcastle and the Hunter are as proud of their region’s mining industry as ever.

Once again the Knights also took to the field in their special hivis miner’s jerseys to show their support for the region’s miners, and the mining industry.

Traditionally regarded as the “son’s of coal miners”, the Newcastle Knights and the miners of the Hunter share many traits. Hardworking and resilient, the Newcastle Knights and our miners continue to embody everything that makes the Hunter great, and this has been shown in this year’s 4th Annual Voice for Mining Family Day.

Newcastle Knights CEO, Matt Gidley, said today’s Voice for Mining Family Day shows that the close links between the mining industry and the Knights continue to grow stronger.

“This partnership with NSW Mining is really important to us. The mining industry is significant in the Hunter region, and rugby league is also really important to the people of the Hunter, so we think it’s a great fit” Gidley said.

NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee said the importance of both teams to the Hunter cannot be understated.

“The Knights and our miners are both integral to the Hunter and with a federal election just around the corner, today’s show of support for is a real shot in the arm for the industry”.

“A strong mining industry means a strong local economy and more jobs for local people and their families. Today’s sea of hivis at Hunter Stadium for the Voice for Mining Family Day is a great show of support for the Newcastle Knights and the miners of the Hunter,” Mr Galilee said.
