PAC gives green light to fourth coal terminal at Port of Newcastle

This week, the Planning Assessment Commission (PAC) has approved Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) T4 project, a fourth coal terminal at the Port of Newcastle.

The $4.8 billion T4 project will generate more than 1,500 jobs, in addition to increasing export capacity by up to 70 million tonnes per annum at full development, which is promising news for the Hunter region. 

The PAC has considered the proposal twice, during the project’s lengthy five-year journey through the Planning System. The PAC’s approval comes after the NSW Department of Planning recommended the project be approved back in June. 

CEO at Port Waratah Coal Services, Hennie du Plooy said the project is vital to plan for future demand, since record export levels will again be reached this year.

‘…the coal chain in the Hunter Valley will achieve record levels once again this year, so it is quite probable that [even though it may not be required immediately] it will be required in the future.”
