Survey confirms record levels of mining spending and jobs in Dubbo LGA

Results from the NSW Minerals Council’s latest annual Member Expenditure Survey have confirmed mining’s ongoing critical economic contribution to the Dubbo Local Government Area (LGA) with record levels of spending and mining jobs.

In the Dubbo LGA, participating mining companies supported over 460 local jobs, the highest result in the history of the survey.

Participating mining companies directly injected over $160 million into the local economy, an increase of over $40 million on the previous financial year and the highest level of spending recorded since the survey was first undertaken. 

The more than $160 million of direct mining spending in the Dubbo LGA last financial year included over $47 million on wages and salaries, and $114 million for goods and services purchased from over 245 mining local supplier businesses.

Across the surrounding region, participating mining companies supported over 4,000 jobs, the highest number of jobs reported in the history of the survey. 

The same companies also directly injected $880 million into the region’s economy in the last financial year, the highest level of spending in the region since the survey was first undertaken.

The $880 million of direct mining spending in the Western region last financial year included over $445 million on wages and salaries, and $435 million for goods and services purchased from over 880 mining supplier businesses across the region.

An economic analysis of the results found the $880 million of direct spending of the 28 participating mining companies in the last financial year contributed around 15% of the GRP of the region’s economy during this period.

“These record results highlight the importance of mining for Dubbo and the surrounding region. Mining clearly continues to provide economic strength and stability to local communities in the region, supporting thousands of local families and businesses,” NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee said today.

“These record results are a timely reminder of the need for policies that support a strong mining sector.”
