Survey confirms millions in mining spending and thousands in mining jobs in the Northern NSW Region
Results from the NSW Minerals Council’s latest annual Member Expenditure Survey confirm mining’s ongoing important economic contribution to the Northern region of NSW, including communities like Narrabri, Boggarbri, Gunnedah, Tamworth and surrounding regions.
Participating mining companies supported over 3,570 jobs in the region, the second highest number of jobs reported in the decade-long history of the survey.
The same companies also directly injected $341 million into the Northern region economy in the last financial year. This is the third year in a row that direct mining spending in the Northern has been over $340 million.
The $341 million of direct mining spending in the Northern region last financial year included over $176 million on wages and salaries, and $158 million for goods and services purchased from over 350 mining supplier businesses across the region.
An economic analysis of these Survey results found this $341 million of direct local mining spending contributed 6% of the GRP of the Northern region’s economy during this period.
“These very strong results highlight the ongoing importance of mining for local communities across the region. Mining clearly continues to provide regional economic strength and stability, supporting thousands of local families and businesses,” NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee said today.
“With an election approaching, these strong results are a timely reminder of the importance of a strong mining sector for the future of the region. Thousands of locals will head to the polls on election day at least partially considering their vote based on who will best support a strong mining sector into the future.”
