The Aurizon story- from the pit to the port

Industry 30 April 2014

“Aurizon aims to be a world leading transport business, to partner with customers for growth and to achieve benchmark safety performance,” Aurizon General Manager Service Delivery New South Wales Steve Richards said.

Aurizon

moves on average more than 700,000 tonnes of coal, iron ore and other minerals as well as agricultural and general freight across the Australia every day.

The coal industry in the Hunter is one of the most efficient operations in the world, from our world best practice mines to the world’s largest coal port at Newcastle.

Aurizon ensures that NSW coal is delivered to port for export to international markets in a timely and efficient manner.

Aurizon is Australia’s largest rail freight operator and services, the coal industry in the Hunter Valley and the Gunnedah Basin in New South Wales and also in Queensland.

“The coal industry in NSW is an essential part of our business now and into the future,” Mr Richards said.

Since commencing coal operations in the NSW in 2005, Aurizon has invested $385 million in new generation locomotives and wagons to serve its customers and will invest a further $250 million over the next three years in rollingstock and locomotives to support growth in the region.

Aurizon is currently investing around $150 million on the

Hexham Train Support Facility

which will service Aurizon’s growing Hunter Valley coal freight business and alleviate capacity pressures in the coal supply chain.

“The investment and job creation for this project marks a significant boost for the local Hunter economy and will support the efficient and competitive delivery of coal for export,” Mr Richards said.

“The first stage of this project is due for completion at the end of 2014. It is a necessary piece of infrastructure to ensure that trains are provided with fuel, water and other supplies, as well as servicing, inspection activities and storage.”

Aurizon is an associate member of the NSW Minerals Council and was a sponsor of the

Industry and Suppliers Conference

last year.
