‘Voice for Mining Family Day’ back on 10 April 2016
“
A big day for rugby league and a big day for our miners
League fans will again be able to cheer on two great teams – the Newcastle Knights and NSW miners – at the popular Voice for Mining Family Day at Hunter Stadium on April 10.
Thousands of miners and their families along with thousands more that work in mining-related businesses are expected to pack Hunter Stadium for the Round 6 NRL clash with the Wests Tigers.
NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee said the Voice for Mining Family Day will again be a fun and positive event for the Hunter community, as well as a chance for miners, their families and the local community to show their support for the women and men that make up our local mining industry.
Fans and mining supporters can join the team in wearing bright orange at Hunter Stadium where the Knights will play in their special high-vis replica miners jersey at Voice for Mining Family Day in support of the region’s miners and all the good things mining brings to the Hunter and the state.
“The Knights and our miners are both integral to the local community, and with a federal election just around the corner, a big show of support for our miners is more important than ever,” he said.
“The game also represents the climax of the inaugural Hunter Coal festival – a community driven celebration of everything coal mining means to the region.
“A strong mining industry means a strong local economy and more jobs for local people and their families. So let’s show our support for the Newcastle Knights and our Hunter miners at Voice for Mining Family Day.”
The Hunter’s coal miners share a strong connection with the Knights, with many past players and relatives of current players working in the region’s mining industry.
“This partnership with NSW Mining is really important to us. The mining industry is significant in the Hunter region, and rugby league is also really important to the people of the Hunter, so we think it’s a great fit,” Newcastle Knights CEO Matt Gidley said.
Fans and mining supporters can purchase the special edition high-vis replica miners jersey and share the team colours at Hunter Stadium and in Round 26 when the Knights will again play in their high-vis jerseys against the St George Illawarra Dragons at Jubilee Oval in Kogarah.
“Miners and supporters of mining can wear orange and high-vis workwear to the game to show everyone just how important mining is to the Hunter,” Gidley added.
