Warkworth modification needed to protect jobs
“The livelihoods of 1,300 Hunter mining workers and their families will be secured by the timely approval of Rio Tinto’s Warkworth mine modification,” NSW Minerals Council CEO, Stephen Galilee said today.
“Over 3,000 jobs have been lost in the NSW resources sector over the last 12 months, mostly in the Hunter. This minor modification will help a further 1,300 jobs from being lost.”
“These jobs contribute to the economic stability of surrounding communities. Losing this workforce would be an economic blow to the entire region,” Mr Galilee said.
“Calls for the modification to be suspended are a threat to jobs and disregard the views of more than 900 people who made submissions to the NSW Planning and Assessment Commission supporting the project.”
“The recent downgrading of economic growth forecasts and increases in expected unemployment rates by the State and Commonwealth Governments are a reminder of the need to attract and keep projects that generate investment and jobs, not turn them away.”
